How to avoid gas

The cause of the gas is primarily the air that you take in when you eat or swallow saliva and the gas emitted by the intestinal bacteria that is activated by the carbohydrates that weren’t digested. The air you swallow affects your ileostomy and the gas from the intestinal bacteria affects colostomy.

To avoid swallowing air with food, do not use straw, don’t talk while you eat, chew well, don’t chew gum and do not smoke.

To minimize gas caused by intestinal bacteria, avoid eating food that increases the gas.
